Home Reading Strategies
Reading is very important at home and during the summer.

  • Reading at home helps your child become more successful all throughout the school year.
  • If you encourage your child to read over the summer, he or she will be more prepared for the next school year.
Below are some reading strategies you can use with your child that we have taught during school.

ALPHABOX

Add words and phrases to the alphabox about a topic.  Use in retells and in writing.

I WONDER

    Students verbalize their own wonderings throughout the story. (Before, during, and after the reading) The reader says, "I wonder..."

FIX-UP STRATEGIES

Students use comprehension and decoding skills as they read a variety of texts.  Examples: picture clues, skip word, find a chunk, get mouth ready, reread, ask a question, or make a connection.

CODING STRATEGY

Students code the text using the following codes

* I already knew this.
