This video shows how to partition circles one more time since students seem to frequently struggle with that skill. This video also shows how to properly display fractions using a number line.

will do to 6K again so it was showing this on a circle six isn't even number it's also are denominator which tells me that I'm going to have 6 total piece my whole so for 6 I was told kids start in the middle and then I told him instead of coming straight across like this I told him to kind of started a diagonal like this because it makes the pieces more even six are very okay so as you can see here you kind of have to go diagonal and put an X through the middle to make sure those pieces are equal okay again the numerator tells us how many of those pieces are shaded so I have to 6 that are shaded so that's how it would show that in a circle now if I wanted to use a rectangle I'm going to kind of turn it this way whoops again 6 this evening I'll start in the middle I always try to tell kids that 3 is half of 6 so that tells us that we're going to have 3 equal pieces on each side okay so if you look at this whole you can see me they're six partition pieces stop perfect I'm so sorry I'm going to actually shade into again to show to six ok so this is just the basics of fractions so they ever have to partition their own shape or after trade in a certain amount to show what fraction this is exactly how they would do that I'm also going to show you a very difficult concept that comes a little bit later which is fractions on a number line when you're doing fractions on a number line is a lot of things that kids try to forget it's very it's very difficult to make mistakes so let's take the fraction to 8 and I'd like to show you how to get on a number line nothing changes are denominators till 8 which tells us that in my whole or all my number line I'm going to have 8 equal pieces again eight is even start in the middle and I know that 4 + 4 is 8 which tells me I need for on each side okay so I always tell kids with weights to make fourths first and then to come in and partition those halves in half how to make eight equal spaces okay and buy spaces this is what I mean okay to go like this one two three four five six seven but as you can see they get 7 okay so that's exactly why we teach kids to count the spaces so we kind of hop 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 okay so you can clearly see that there are 8 partition pieces some kids like to do circles 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 either way we have 8 total pieces on a number line our numerator which is 2 tells us how many of the spaces that we're going to count okay so with that sometimes there might be a symbol sometimes there might be a star or something / 2/8 so a lot of times kids will have to identify where that symbol is in this case you can see that the star is placed after two spaces which tells me that I'm a 2/8 because I've passed two spaces out of eight total okay so kids will have to identify where the star is but then I also have to label the number line themselves which might look something like this then I also have to go well this is 08 because we haven't moved yet this would be 1/8 to 8 and so on okay so if they wanted to leave correctly label really help you to identify where certain things are located so we've covered fractions partitioned on a whole circles squares rectangles and we've also partition number next video I'm going to do some more about equivalent fractions because that's a little bit more difficult so hopefully this helps you guys and I'm going to keep some more videos coming for you
